We believe in the principle that horses should only be racing free of medication. By taking this important step together, the Maryland racing community will become stronger and provide the right foundation for our sport to progress into the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"adleft\" class=\"inline-advertisement zoneid-433\">\r\n<div id=\"beacon_fb97cda94d\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/as2.paulickreport.com\/www\/delivery\/lg.php?bannerid=10976&amp;campaignid=422&amp;zoneid=433&amp;loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.paulickreport.com%2Fnews%2Fthe-biz%2Fmaryland-jockey-club-announces-intent-write-no-lasix-2-year-old-races%2F&amp;referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.paulickreport.com%2F&amp;cb=fb97cda94d\" alt=\"\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" \/>Permitted use of Lasix was first allowed by the Maryland Racing Commission more than 40 years ago on a limited basis and only upon a veterinarian&#8217;s examination and confirmation that the horse was a \u201cbleeder\u201d and had a medical need that required the administration of Lasix. Over the years, however, Lasix became a commonly used drug, administered to a large percentage of the horse population to enhance performance rather than as a medical therapeutic.<\/span><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cThe clear weight of evidence shows that what began decades ago as a limited therapeutic to assist the few horses that were problem bleeders has become a crutch for those looking for a competitive edge,\u201d said Craig Fravel, Chief Executive Officer, 1\/ST Racing. \u201cThe time is now to address this matter and to do so without delay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In April 2019, the phasing out of Lasix in 2-year-old horses was announced by a coalition of the country&#8217;s major Thoroughbred racing associations and organizations, which include:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The Stronach Group&#8217;s Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields (California) and Gulfstream Park (Florida)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Del Mar and Los Alamitos (California)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Churchill Downs Inc. and Keeneland (Kentucky)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">New York Racing Association (New York)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Lone Star Park (Texas)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Oaklawn Park (Arkansas)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Breeders&#8217; Cup Limited<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders&#8217; Association (TOBA)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">American Graded Stakes Committee of TOBA<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Kentucky Thoroughbred Association<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Under this program, which began on January 1 of this year, 2-year-old horses are not permitted to be treated with Lasix within 24 hours of a race.
